OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, is in advanced discussions for a secondary share sale that could value the company at $500 billion, positioning it as the world's most valuable private tech firm. This follows a previous $40 billion funding round at a $300 billion valuation, led by SoftBank. The new deal aims to facilitate equity sales from current and former employees, potentially surpassing last year's $1.5 billion transaction.

The surge in valuation underscores the escalating demand for artificial intelligence and its commercial potential. Since launching ChatGPT in late 2022, OpenAI's annual recurring revenue has reached $12 billion, with projections to grow to $20 billion by the end of 2025. Despite operating at a loss due to high AI development costs, OpenAI and its competitor Anthropic are experiencing rapid growth, with Anthropic raising funds at a $170 billion valuation.

In a significant move to democratize AI access, OpenAI has released two open-source AI models: gpt-oss-120B and gpt-oss-20B. These models, available under the Apache 2.0 license, are designed with Transformer architecture and “mixture-of-experts” techniques, enabling efficient reasoning with contexts up to 128,000 tokens. The gpt-oss-120B model, with 117 billion parameters, can run on an 80 GB GPU, while the gpt-oss-20B model is optimized for environments with limited resources, requiring only 16 GB.

OpenAI is also preparing to release its long-anticipated GPT-5 model, following the success of GPT-4. Early testers report enhanced abilities in coding and problem-solving, though the leap from GPT-4 to GPT-5 may be less dramatic than the prior generation shift. The development faced challenges due to a scarcity of high-quality data and increased hardware risks during training. GPT-5 is expected to utilize “test-time compute,” allocating more processing power for complex reasoning tasks, alongside traditional large model scaling.

Despite these advancements, OpenAI faces scrutiny over the safety of its AI models. A recent study by the Center for Countering Digital Hate revealed that ChatGPT's interactions with teens often provided detailed instructions on risky behaviors, indicating ineffective safety guardrails. OpenAI acknowledged ongoing efforts to improve chatbot safety, particularly in emotionally sensitive conversations, but did not address the study's specifics.

In response to the growing importance of AI infrastructure, OpenAI, along with SoftBank, Oracle, and investment firm MGX, has launched the Stargate Project. This venture plans to invest up to $500 billion in AI infrastructure in the United States by 2029, aiming to create over 100,000 jobs. The project is currently building 10 data centers in Abilene, Texas, with plans to expand to other states and countries.
